Sources: Kevin Ollie is Hot Commodity for Lakers Job

Coming off an improbable national championship run with the UConn Huskies, head coach Kevin Ollie has surfaced as one of the leading candidates for the Los Angeles Lakers coaching vacancy.

With Mike D’Antoni resigning this week, Byron Scott, Steve Kerr, Jeff Van Gundy have also been mentioned to fulfill the spot.

Ollie played his high school ball in Crenshaw, and has a number of ties to Los Angeles. He’s a well-respected and, now, a proven young head coach who can immediately demand the respect of his players.

But there are other enticing coaching options that could open up in a few weeks. If Oklahoma City loses Game 7 against the Memphis Grizzlies on Saturday, there’s a chance Scott Brooks could be fired despite his success. Those sentiments can also be echoed for Warriors coach Mark Jackson.

Kevin Durant has been on record fully endorsing Ollie, as the two have an incredible relationship dating back to their time as teammates in Oklahoma City. If Ollie takes the Lakers job, there’s a strong chance that he can finagle Durant into coming to Los Angeles in a few years as a free agent.

UConn has stated that they’ll rework Ollie’s contract as soon as he returns from recruiting. As of right now, if he decides to leave Storrs, he must pay UConn $2.55 million to get out of the contract.
